What is Gum Disease?

Depending on your age you have a 35 to 50 percent chance of having a serious gum infection in your mouth right now and at least an 80 percent chance of having a mild gum infection. These infections are called periodontitis and gingivitis respectively and can lead to serious oral problems such as drifting teeth, loose teeth, and eventual tooth loss. The gums can pull back from the teeth (recede) exposing the roots, making the teeth appear longer and unsightly.

Most of the time gum disease is a silent, unnoticed process unless it is discovered at dental checkups. Here at Dental Bliss, we offer the latest technologies in gum disease diagnosis. We can actually test for specific germs and their toxins which cause gum disease ensuring an accurate diagnosis. Through the use of modern technologies such as lasers, treatment can be surprisingly comfortable and extremely effective.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Dr. Atchley and his team educate their patients on what to look for in determining the health of gums and teeth. Healthy gums appear a lighter shade of pink, as well as feel firm to the touch. Your gums should fit snug around the bottom of each tooth.

The following are some periodontal disease symptoms:

  • Swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed profusely
  • Gums feel tender to the slightest touch
  • Discolored gums (purple, bright red, or dark red)
  • Spaces developing between teeth
  • Gums receding from the bottom of teeth
